Vier Berliner AusnahmemusikerInnen widmen sich den traumhaft schönen Melodien und facettenreichen Harmonien aus der Feder des Dukes und seines engen Mitstreiters in intimer und einmaliger Besetzung.

Geboren 1988, studierte Fabiana Striffler Jazz und klassische Geige an der Universität der Künste und der Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin und teilte bereits in jungen Jahren Bühnen und Studios mit namhaften Musikern aus der Jazz-, Klassik- und Popszene. Ihr Debütalbum Mahagoni wurde vom Deutschlandfunk als „Bestes Album“ des Jahres nominiert. Darauf folgte ihr Album Sweet And So Solitary, welches von der Zeitschrift Zitty als „Revolution im Jazz“ bezeichnet wurde. 2015 erhielt sie das „Elsa Neumann“-Stipendium für Komposition und Performance mit einem modernen und improvisierenden Streichquartett. Von 2013 bis 2018 war sie des Weiteren Stipendiatin des Yehudi Menuhin Vereines. Sie bespielte Spielstätten wie die Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Konzerthaus Berlin, Filharmonie Brno CZ, Le Palais des Congrès de Paris FR, Volksbühne Berlin, Sunset Paris FR, A-Trane Berlin, Jazz Dock Prague, JazzFest Brno CZ, Baltic Circle Festival Helsinki FI, MusicFestival Royal Lazienki PL, Ear to the Ground-Festival BE, Fusion... Sie tourte weltweit in über 20 Ländern und kollaborierte in über 40 Studioproduktionen, einer Reihe von Radio-, und Theater-, und Opern-Produktionen und wird sowohl als brillante Geigerin, als auch als energiegeladene Fiddlerin beschrieben.

Declan Forde ist ein Pianist aus Schottland und lebt seit 2014 in Berlin. In den letzten Jahren hat sich Forde in Berlin zu einem unfassbar vielseitigen Pianisten entwickelt, der in so gut wie jedem musikalischen Kontext zuhause ist. Vom Early Jazz mit Igor Spallati's Musicomaniacs, über die Aufführung der Musik von Duke Ellington mit dem amerikanischen Bassisten Greg Cohen (Ornette Coleman, John Zorn, Woody Allen, etc.); Originalmusik mit James Banner's Usine bis hin zu frei improvisierter Musik mit Künstlern wie Jeff Williams, John Hollenbeck, Tobias Delius, Max Andrzejewski, Cansu Tanrikulu, Rudi Mahal, Jan Roder und Michael Griener. Forde tritt auch solo auf und wurde von den Berliner Festspielen eingeladen, im Rahmen der Installation "Antoine's Organ" des amerikanischen Künstlers Rashid Johnson im Berliner Gropius Bau von Juli bis Dezember 2019 aufzutreten. Außerhalb der Welt des Jazz und der improvisierten Musik tritt Forde seit über zehn Jahren mit der schottischen Sängerin und Künstlerin Rachel Sermanni auf, tourt mit ihr und macht Aufnahmen.

James Banner wurde in 1991 Dudley, England, geboren und lebt heute in Berlin, wo er als improvisierender Musiker und Komponist arbeitet. Zu seinen aktuellen Projekten gehören: USINE mit Cansu Tanrıkulu, Max Andrzejewski und Declan Forde; das Abhalten von Workshops und das Entwickeln neuer Möglichkeiten am Solo-Kontrabass. Desweiteren ist noch das Machair Duo mit Stephanie Lamprea zu nennen, das sich auf die Entwicklung elektroakustischer Werke in Zusammenarbeit mit Komponisten konzentriert. Außerdem ist er Co-Kurator der zweimonatlichen Improvisationsmusik-Residenz Practically Married mit dem Pianisten Declan Forde im Berliner Donau115.

Ugo Alunni ist ein Schlagzeuger aus Perugia, Italien. Er besuchte das Conservatorio di Musica "Francesco Morlacchi" di Perugia (2000-2004) und zog danach nach New York, um an der Collective School of Music (2005-2006) weiter zu studieren. Seit 2010 lebt er in Berlin, wo er am Jazz Institut Berlin unter der Leitung von John Hollenbeck, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Greg Cohen und David Friedman studierte und 2016 seinen Abschluss machte. Er hat mit Rossano Emili, Perugia Jazz Orchestra, Pietro Tonolo, Joe Chambers, Dan Kinzelman, Alessandro Lanzoni, Elias Stemeseder, Phil Donkin, Uli Kempendorff, Julia Hülsmann und vielen anderen gespielt.

This acoustic Sunday concert is dedicated to two of the greatest composers in jazz history: Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn. Four exceptional Berlin-based musicians will bring to life the stunning melodies and intricate harmonies of the Duke and his close collaborator in an intimate and unique ensemble setting.

Born in 1988, Fabiana Striffler studied jazz and classical violin at the University of the Arts and the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin. From an early age, she performed on stage and in the studio alongside renowned musicians from the jazz, classical, and pop worlds. Her debut album, Mahagoni, was nominated as "Best Album of the Year" by Deutschlandfunk. This was followed by her album Sweet And So Solitary, which Zitty magazine hailed as a "revolution in jazz".

In 2015, she was awarded the Elsa Neumann Scholarship for composition and performance with a modern improvising string quartet. From 2013 to 2018, she was also a scholarship recipient of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation. Striffler has performed in venues such as Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Konzerthaus Berlin, Filharmonie Brno, Palais des Congrès de Paris, Volksbühne Berlin, and Jazz Dock Prague, and has toured across more than 20 countries. She has been involved in over 40 studio productions, as well as various radio, theater, and opera projects. Known both as a brilliant violinist and an electrifying fiddler, she has received high praise:

Barcelona native Gianni Gagliardi "a rising star on the Brooklyn jazz scene," as Ron Netsky of the Rochester City Newspaper writes. His unique sound, originality and artistic integrity have enabled him to perform around the world in a wide variety of settings, from jazz to flamenco with the likes of Al Foster, John Clayton, Dick Oats, Gilad Hekselman and Jordi Rossy. He has been a student at Berklee College of Music, the State University of New York, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Conservatoire National Superior de Paris. Gianni is the founder of BCN Jazz Collective, a label and platform for young composers to publish and promote their works. He is in demand as a sideman and leader; his recordings have received the highest praise from international critics.

Declan Forde is a pianist from Scotland and has been living in Berlin since 2014. In recent years, Forde has developed into a pianist in Berlin who covers a wide range of musical situations. From early jazz with Igor Spallati's Musicomaniacs, to performing the music of Duke Ellington with American bassist Greg Cohen (Ornette Coleman, John Zorn, Woody Allen, etc.); original music with James Banner's Usine to free improvised music with artists such as Jeff Williams, John Hollenbeck, Tobias Delius, Max Andrzejewski, Cansu Tanrikulu, Rudi Mahal, Jan Roder and Michael Griener.... Outside the world of jazz and improvised music, Forde has been performing, touring and recording with Scottish vocalist and artist Rachel Sermanni for over ten years.

James Banner was born in Dudley, England and is now based in Berlin, working as an improvising musician and composer. Current projects include: USINE with Cansu Tanrıkulu, Max Andrzejewski and Declan Forde; commissioning, workshopping and recording new solo pieces for double bass and presenting his solo programme; Borage with Megan Jowett; Machair Duo with Stephanie Lamprea focusing on commissioning and developing electro-acoustic works in collaboration with composers, and class-work. He also co-curates the bi-monthly improvised music residency Practically Married with pianist Declan Forde at Berlin’s Donau115.

Ugo Alunni is a percussionist from Perugia, Italy.
